Purpose of Newsletters:
The purpose of a Lodge newsletter is to tell members of the goals and philosophies of the Order, and report news of what is going on at the district, state, and international level. Members need to be informed and reminded that the Loyal Order of Moose extends beyond the Lodge's Social Quarters, and that our goals are not just dispensing inexpensive drinks and food.
A newsletter should be easily readable, well-organized, and informative. Articles should be written in a news reporting fashion, and photographs should be included to add emphasis or clarity to articles. Each committee chairman should submit an article for inclusion in the newsletter, especially the Membership Committee Chairman. The District Secretary will be happy to provide information on what is happening at the district level, and the Moose International website www.mooseintl.org is a great source of news on the International level.
Informing members of Lodge/Chapter activities and programs contributes to getting members involved, and helps increase Lodge revenues. Reminding members of the organization's goals and the reasons they joined also goes a long way toward membership retention.
Bear in Mind: It is a statistical fact that only 10 to 12 percent of an organization's membership is active. That means 88 to 90 percent of the membership has no clue what is going on in the Lodge, the district, the state, or on the international level. This is the audience that a newsletter should be directed toward. Let them know what is happening, and cause them to think that it might be fun to join in on the many activities being offered.
Permit to Publish: A permit to publish a newsletter must be secured from Moose International. Click here for Application for Publication Permit.
Attention is called to item #2 of the Application; it clearly states what wording Moose International requires every newsletter to contain on its title page.
Official Logos: The two official logos of the fraternity, that is the Standing Moose (also known as Plaza Block) and the Family Fraternity Logo (not Family Center logo) are also required to be in the newsletter. These logos are available by clicking on the hilighted items.
Advertising in Newsletters: An article written by Kurt Wehrmeister, Director of Communications and Public Affairs outlines what every editor needs to know regarding advertising in newsletters. Click here for link.
Publications Tutorial:
Moose International offers a thirty minute tutorial on Lodge newsletters. While it is not intended to replace the in-class three hour Publications Workshop offered by FBMA, it does offer Lodge editors some helpful information to get started. Click here for link.
Websites:
Since websites are considered as public media, the General Laws requires that no public solicitation for membership takes place (Sec 45.3), and a mandatory disclaimer which may be found on page 78 Of the General Laws at Section 45.3 (Or copy and paste from this site's home page) on the under "IMPORTANT NOTICE", be prominently displayed .
Publications Workshop: Lodges interested in hosting, or attending a workshop should call the Publications Chairman.
For help with newsletters or to get questions answered: Call or contact the Publications Chairman at the numbers or email address provided above.
